CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – The granddaughter of a former chancellor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill has been arrested in connection with the toppling of the school’s on-campus Confederate monument.
Margarita Sitterson, 18, is the fourth person charged after the statue known as “Silent Sam” was torn down amid protests on Aug. 20.
She is charged with defacing a public statue and misdemeanor public disturbance.
CBS 17 has confirmed Margarita’s grandfather, J. Carlyle Sitterson, served as chancellor of the University from 1966 to 1972.
Margarita Sitterson is one of four charged in connection with the toppling. The other three appeared in Orange County court Monday.
She is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 13, court records show.
More arrests were made at an Aug. 25 rally where the monument once stood.
