SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — Authorities say a crossing guard was hurt in a hit-and-run while helping students cross a street.

It happened around 7:20 a.m. Tuesday at Jesse Boyd Elementary School on Fernwood-Glendale Road.

Sally Jeter Gregg, a spokesperson for the school district, said the crossing guard, Emma Taylor, was hit while safeguarding children across the street in front of the school. 

“None of our students were injured, but several witnessed the accident,” Gregg said in an email.

Counseling was provided to children who saw the hit-and-run. 

Taylor’s granddaughter tells 7 News that the 73-year-old is in critical condition as of Wednesday morning. 

School officials say they were initially told that Taylor would be fine, but her status later changed and she was being closed monitored.

Lance Cpl. Joel Hovis with the S.C. Highway Patrol says there are few details about the vehicle that hit her.

Troopers say the vehicle is described as a dark-colored car. 

Gregg said the crossing guard is a “beloved” member of the school and has been a crossing guard for several years.

Spartanburg Police Department said in a Facebook past that Taylor was honored as the state Crossing Guard of the Year in 2015.
