For the first time in more than 20 years, the Food and Drug Administration wants to change mammogram standards.
Under the proposal, doctors would have to provide patients with more information on their breast density after mammograms.
Officials said dense breasts are known to be a cancer risk, and they also make mammograms more difficult to interpret.
“So what they are suggesting is to change in the way mammograms are reported, but in the actual way they are reported so if they have dense breast tissue it is noted in the report,“ said Dr. Tom Cummins with Bon Secours Chief Medical Officer.
