The family of a man shot and killed early Saturday morning during an officer-involved shooting in Bailey say he was 28-year-old Jonathan Ramirez.
Nash County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to what authorities initially described as a call for service involving Ramirez, around 5 a.m. in the 1200 block of Maudis Road where he lived.
Authorities say shots were fired during the encounter and Ramirez died at the scene.
Ramirez’s mother, Francisa Ramirez told CBS 17 she was sleeping when she heard gunshots. She says she ran outside and found her son on the ground, bleeding, near his work truck.
She says he worked for an electric company and was about to get married.
Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone says a woman called 911 reporting she had been assaulted and when deputies arrived, Ramirez got out of a car armed with a shotgun.
That is when Stone says officers shot Ramirez.
Stone says he believes the shooting was justified and the officers involved in the shooting are on administrative duty.
“A citizen of our community has lost his life, a family is mourning, and our law enforcement agency is deeply saddened as a result of what has happened. Please join us as our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this tragic incident,” said Chief Deputy Brandon Medina.
The State Bureau of Investigations is investigating the incident.
