OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA/WBTW) — A fire department volunteer and her family managed to escape an early-morning fire in Seneca.

Jessica Grant with Corinth-Shiloh Volunteer Fire Department confirmed the homeowner is a volunteer EMT with the department.

Firefighters responded to the blaze around 5:30 a.m. Monday.

The home is on Shady Lane in Seneca.

Fire Chief Charlie King with the Seneca Fire Department says, “We got a 911 call from a resident inside the home, stating that their house was on fire and that they were trapped inside and couldn’t get out.”

Grant said the volunteer and two family members made it out.

Two were taken to a hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Grant said one dog and two rabbits survived. Sadly, four dogs did not survive the fire.

The Red Cross is helping the family.

7News is told most of their possessions were lost.

The fire department is working on plans for a fundraiser and clothing drive.

Chief King said, “That adds another dimension when it’s somebody that you know and you volunteer certainly that they serve their community both as a school teacher and a volunteer firemen.”

Corinth-Shiloh, Seneca, Friendship, Walhalla and Keowee fire departments responded, along with Oconee County Emergency Services and Rescue 22.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
