Three people, including two children, were injured and an elderly woman was killed in a dog attack in Robeson County.
The dog attack involved Rottweilers and happened Monday evening in the 2200 block of Olivet Church Road in the Marietta Community, according to Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins. The dogs were shot by deputies during the incident.
Robeson County Animal Control was called, the sheriff also confirmed.
The RCSO identified the woman who died as 73-year-old Esta Currier, of Olivet Church Rd., in a press release on Tuesday afternoon. Currier died from injuries sustained in the attack.
Two children, ages 9 and 7, were also injured, according to the release. The two kids are Currier’s grandchildren and were taken to McLeod Hospital in Florence. They are listed as stable.
“When the two responding deputies arrived they observed four Rottweiler dogs in the roadway. As the deputies exited their vehicles, they were approached by the dogs in an aggressive manner,” says the release. “The officers discharged their weapons to stop the threat of injuries. The dogs died and were taken into custody of the Robeson County Animal Control.”
The owner of the dogs, identified as 56-year-old Brenda Walters, was also injured, the release also says. Walters was treated and released from Southeastern Medical Center.
The NC State Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation, which is “a normal practice when an officer discharges his or her weapon.”
