An elderly Scotland County couple has been charged with the murder of their neighbor.
A post on Scotland County Detective Division’s Facebook page says the Scotland County Criminal Investigative Division arrested Jasper David Peeples and Barbara Ellen Peeples, both of the Crandall Street area of Wagram, North Carolina, after a shooting.
Jasper Peeples was charged with “allegedly committing two felony counts of attempted murder” and “allegedly committing two felony counts of conspiracy to commit murder,” according to the post. Barbara Peeples was charged with “allegedly committing two counts of felony conspiracy to commit murder.” The investigation involved two victims, also of the Crandall Street area.
Another post of the detective division’s Facebook page on Tuesday says Jasper Peeples, 69, has been charged with first degree murder and attempted first degree murder, and the previous counts of attempted murder will dismissed and replaced with these new charges. Barbara Peeples, 73, has been charged with first degree murder and attempted first degree murder. Both are being held without bond in the Scotland County Detention Center and are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
On Saturday around 4:30 p.m., a shooting occurred in the area of Crandall Street in Wagram, NC, according to the post. Two victims were identified as a married couple who resided in the area and who were reportedly neighbors to Jasper and Barbara Peeples. Both victims were taken by medical flight for treatment.
“On or about October 14, 2018, Mr. James Chestnutt, 68, died as a result of this shooting” from “sustaining several critical gunshot wound,” the post says. On Saturday, the surviving victim called 911 and reported that she and her husband were allegedly shot by their neighbors.
