Authorities say the owner of a popular South Carolina restaurant didn’t report more than $2.7 million in sales to the state Department of Revenue.
News outlets report Jeremy Chavis, the owner of Jackson’s Southern Kitchen in West Columbia, was arrested Friday on charges of tax evasion. A state Department of Revenue release says Chavis failed to report more than $2.7 million in sales at the restaurant from 2014 to 2017.
It says Chavis evaded paying more than $213,000 in sales tax by underreporting gross sales on monthly sales tax returns filed with the department. WIS-TV reports a note left on the door of the restaurant says “unforeseen circumstances” caused it to close Friday. The note says the restaurant will reopen “ASAP.”
It’s unclear if Chavis has a lawyer.
