A Dillon man has been charged after a woman died from a heroin overdose.

A press release from the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office says 35-year-old Marquand Jerome Newell was arrested by investigators on Wednesday. Newell is charged with one count of felony second degree murder. He is in the Robeson County Detention Center and bond is set at $500,000.

According to the release, deputies with the RCSO responded to 182 Piedmont Drive in Rowland on May 9 for a cardiac arrest. When deputies arrived they found 27-year-old Simone Sasha Hunt unresponsive.

Investigators responded and learned from witnesses that Hunt was provided heroin by Newell on May 9, the release also states. Shortly after being provided with the heroin, which Hunt “ingested,” Hunt died.

The release also says Newell was detained by RCSO investigators at the Marion County Detention Center after he waived extradition. Newell was being released from the MCDC after being held on bond for several drug violations charged by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office on July 27.

“When individuals overdose and die we are investigating further as to where the drugs originated and further investigation continues,” the release states.

The Dillon County Sheriff’s Office, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted with this case.
