Darlington Co. Sheriff’s Office deputy to act as interim police chief for town of Lamar, mayor says

A Darlington County Sheriff’s Office deputy will act as the interim police chief for the town of Lamar, the town’s mayor says.

According to Darnell Byrd McPherson, the Mayor of Lamar, the town of Lamar is contracting with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office to provide administrative oversight to the Lamar Police Department for the next six months.

McPherson said Lt. Robby Kilgo will be acting as the town’s interim police chief and will be taking these duties in addition to his existing duties with the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Tony Chavis has assigned Lt. Kilgo to this role.

“Lt. Kilgo comes to us with a stellar law enforcement background and has hit the ground running! Our current team of officers have embraced this development and are working cooperatively to ensure Lamar PD is one of the best in the state! We are grateful to Sheriff Chavis for supporting the Town of Lamar in this and other ways,” said McPherson.

McPherson also said the town will use their current law enforcement budget to fulfill the terms of their contract with the sheriff’s office.

At the end of six months, Lamar officials plan to evaluate the situation, according to McPherson.
