GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – “I always say never celebrate your victories too early,” Morgan Williams said.
Morgan Williams is part of the Mom’s Liberal Happy Hour group who are the sponsors of Drag Queen Story Time.
She says she hopes the story hour at the Five Forks Library will still happen this Sunday.
Williams says the problem wasn’t the content of the event, but the way they tried to organize the attendees by using a website called Eventbrite.
“By creating the Eventbrite where we were just trying to help organize a very large group of people with interest in the event it turned out to be a violation,” Williams said.
The Greenville County Library System issued a statement on Tuesday saying “the event listing on eventbrite.com violates library system policy in two ways: it restricts admittance to those who hold tickets and it requires those attending an event in a library system meeting room to show identification.”
Williams believes this policy was introduced just one day before the cancellation. She calls it heart breaking.
“We put so much time and effort into making this a safe fun event not just our liberal group, but the police department and employees from the library have been so supportive,” Williams said.
The day of the cancellation one of the drag queens who was going to read at the original story time went back to the library and reserved a room for the same date and time.
According to Rylee it was approved and story time is back on. Williams says she can’t wait for Sunday.
“My kids get to hear some really amazing stories from some really amazing people,” she said.
The group GOP Politics of South Carolina was originally planning to protest the event, and after hearing of the cancellation they sent us a statement on the issue:
The cancellation of ‘Drag Queen Story Hour’ at the Five Forks Library is a clear victory for the residents of the Upstate.
We all know what the event organizers attempted to do here: Promote adult entertainment at a public venue, specifically targeting children. Upstate residents overwhelmingly rejected this obvious attempt to indoctrinate our children with sexual propaganda, evidenced by the thousands and thousands of petition signatures, social media posts, emails, and phone calls.
Moving forward, we know these same event organizers will try to host similar events in the near future. For that reason, we are currently working closely with State House representatives to propose a bill that would prevent any group from using public libraries to promote sexual content. It’s absolutely imperative that we draw a hard line in the sand when it comes to defending our children, and this legislative effort is a critical part of that goal.
While we applaud the LGBTQ community for gaining civil rights in recent years, we 100% condemn any attempts to infiltrate public venues and preach a radical, sexual message that targets our children. We absolutely refuse to allow that to happen, plain and simple. The residents of the Upstate are united in their resolve to win this fight at every opportunity, and we look forward to taking this battle to the legislature.
