Congressman Joe Cunningham toured the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center Friday in an effort to enhance services for veterans.
Friday, Cunningham made his way through the halls of the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.
“Today has been a learning day for me,” Cunningham said.
Cunningham was recently appointed to the House Veterans Affairs Committee and serves on two subcommittees; economic opportunity and technology modernization.
“I’m looking to using that seat at those subcommittees and at the committee level in order to improve the lives on veterans because they’ve made the ultimate sacrifice to our country,” he said. “It’s important we honor that and give them the very best healthcare they deserve.”
In addition to quality healthcare services, Cunningham wants to ensure veterans have jobs and the hospital has modern technology.
Friday, Cunningham saw just how much the VA hospital has grown over the years, but he believes they have a little more growing to do especially when it comes to medical records.
“Why when they go from on va facility to another do they have to chase down their charts?” he asked. “It’s 2019, Netflix knows what you want to watch before you know you want to watch it on there. It’s important our VA follows suit and that technology be at our fingertips.”
Whether it’s through technology or through economic opportunities, Cunningham said the ultimate goal is showing appreciation to veterans.
“The goal is to make sure the care our veterans are provided matches or exceeds the sacrifices they’ve made for our country because they deserve nothing less, period,” he said.
Congressman Cunningham said his next steps are getting straight to work with his subcommittees to modernize services at the VA hospital.
