Coastal Carolina University has the highest average student loan debt per borrower in South Carolina, a report from LendEDU says. 

LendEDU released it’s annual Student Loan Debt by School by State report on August 8. LendEDU  says on its website the report is “a comprehensive analysis of student loan debt statistics for over 1,000 colleges and universities throughout the United States.” 

Of the 50 states and Washington D.C., Pennsylvania had the highest average debt per borrower at $36,193, the report says. Utah had the lowest average debt per borrower at $18,425. South Carolina was ranked 38 of 51, with an average debt per borrower of $30,310. North Carolina was ranked 14th, with an average debt per borrower of $26,164. 

18 schools were ranked within the state of South Carolina, according to the report. Coastal Carolina was ranked 18, having the highest average student loan debt per borrower in the state at $37,373. Coker College was ranked number one, with the lowest average student loan debt per borrower at $20,494. 

The report adds the average private student debt per borrower at CCU is $42,624 and $14,567 at Coker College.

34 schools in North Carolina were ranked in the report. Chowan University was ranked at number 34, with the highest average student loan debt per borrower at $38,443, according to the report. Western Carolina University was ranked number one, with the lowest average student loan debt per borrower at $15,669. 

The average private student loan debt per borrower at Chowan University is $26,995 and $15,784 at WCU, the report also says.

250 schools were also each ranked for having the highest or lowest average debt per borrower from the Class of 2017. These rankings can be seen here

According to the report, the average debt per borrower for the Class of 2017 was $28,288, compared to $27,975 for the Class of 2016. 

In the United States, about 45 million people are student loan borrowers, the report states. The total amount of outstanding student loan debt is about $1.52 trillion dollars.
