Car hits 5 kids, 2 adults heading to school bus stop in Florida

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Five kids and two adults were hit by a car as they were heading to a school bus stop in Tampa Thursday morning.

All seven people were transported to local hospitals, according to a Tampa Police Department spokesperson.

The crash happened around 8:10 a.m. at Marvy and Bougainvillea Avenues.

Parents were heading to the school bus with their kids when they were hit by a car driving at a high rate of speed about a block away from the stop.

Three of the children are 6-years-old. A 9-year-old and and a 12-year-old were also injured.

Two of the children sustained serious injuries, but none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

The adult victims were identified as Yanely Jurado, 31, and Laura Patino Chavez, 32.

Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan described the scene as chaotic. When emergency crews arrived there were injured people with shoes and backpacks scattered around.

He said the driver remained at the scene after hitting the children. The driver’s name has not been released. He has not been charged.

Dugan said investigators are trying to figure out what happened.

“There are a lot of moving parts. We are piecing everything together,” he said.

Dugan said the accident shows how life can change in an instant.

“Hours ago, they were trick-or-treating. Now, they’re at the hospital,” he said of the children who were injured.

The children attend Woodson K-8 School on North 22nd Street, Dugan said.

A Tampa Fire Rescue truck that was responding to the crash was involved in an accident at Nebraska and E. Bougainvillea Avenue. Three people, including two first responders were taken to a local hospital.

A TFR spokesperson said the accident happened when the fire truck was navigating through traffic on Nebraska Avenue.
