NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Boeing now says it knew about a problem with the 737 Max 8 in 2017, one year before two deadly crashes involving the same plane.
The company says a feature that should have been standard on the planes only worked if the plane had an additional optional feature.
In a statement, Boeing said engineers knew the planes did not meet certain requirements in 2017. It goes on to say that after a review the company decided the existing functionality was acceptable until the next software update.
They also said the issue “did not adversely impact airplane safety or operation.”
Due to that, Boeing never told airlines or the Federal Aviation Administration about the issue.
According to the New York Times, the FAA said Boeing briefed them about the confusion and called the issue “low risk.”
