JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD)– Officials with the St. John’s Fire District say at approximately 8:00am this morning, a body was found in the waterway near the Limehouse bridge.

Deputy Coroner Kelly Kraus stated that Joseph “Riley” Chomyn, 17, of Isle of Palms, was recovered this morning.

According to the St. John’s Fire District, they were searching for a 17-year-old who fell off a boat near the sandbar by the Limehouse Bridge. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources responded just before 8 p.m. Saturday.

An official with Porter-Gaud School confirmed with News 2 that the missing teen was a student there.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of senior Joey Chomyn. He was an extraordinary student and sailor with a passion for the water and life.  We will miss him dearly. We ask for your thoughts and prayers for the Chomyn family and the entire Porter-Gaud community. “

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, St. Andrews Fire, North Charleston Fire, and the Coast Guard were also assisting in the search for Chomyn.

The cause of death is pending at this time, Coroner Kraus added.
