GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCBD) – Parents of a baby filed suit against Goose Creek daycare after the child’s sternum was broken.

According to the complaint filed Tuesday, in September 2018, the parents of the 12-month-old baby noticed bruising on his body and took him to MUSC for medical evaluation. The doctors at MUSC diagnosed the baby with a fractured sternum. The parents believe the child was injured at the Harvest Time Academy daycare in Goose Creek.

Attorneys claim the daycare never notified the parents of any injury to the child nor reported the incident to DSS.

The suit claims the owner of the daycare failed to take the proper measures to minimize the risk of injuries; failed to prevent the injuries; failed to adequately supervise, assess, and monitor the baby; and failed to properly suspect, recognize, and treat the signs and symptoms of a serious injury.

According to the suit, DSS has issued citations to the defendant on several occasions since 2017 in regards to improper staffing. Specifically with respect to this incident, on September 24, 2018, during an investigation by DSS, it was noted that the staffing ratios in the one-year-old rooms were below standard, according to the suit.

The daycare has not responded to attempts to get a comment.
