COLUMBIA, SC (WCBD) – The Lexington County Coroner says the armed subject locked himself in a car on Interstate 26 is deceased.
Authorities say the armed subject who forced police to close a section of Interstate 26 near Columbia is dead.
An ambulance pulled away from the scene of an incident where an armed subject locked himself in a car just east of exit 113 on Interstate 26, according to NBC affiliate WIS.
Traffic was blocked off by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department as a result.
Lexington County Sheriff’s Capt. Adam Myrick says officers shut down I-26 in both directions around 11 a.m. Wednesday near the state Highway 302 exit west of Columbia while officers negotiate with the man by a cellphone.
Traffic backed up several miles in both directions on the highway that connects Columbia to Charleston as detours were set up. Hundreds of cars and trucks closest to the scene are stopped.
Myrick says deputies are trying to figure out why the man was running from police.
The suspect’s name has not been released. The suspect is wanted on a failure to appear in general sessions court warrant, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department added. The original charges related to that arrest are unlawful carrying of a pistol, illegal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and failure to stop for blue lights.
