SAINT STEPHEN, S.C. (WCBD) – A South Carolina woman has journeyed through motherhood while battling renal failure.
Now, she’s searching for a living donor to give her the gift of a lifetime— a kidney.
Nearly 24 years ago after her first pregnancy with her eldest son, Tasha King learned she only had one kidney. “They call it Renal Disease or Kidney Disease,” King said.
From that moment, she knew that her journey through motherhood would have its challenges. “I’m tired, I’m drained. Being with my kids, I am not as active with my 7-year-old as I used to be,” King said.
As the years progressed, her only kidney began shutting down, forcing her to have to start dialysis for renal failure.
“If it wasn’t for the dialysis machine— I wouldn’t be here today,” King said. She has spent the last 15 years on Hemodialysis. With the machine set up in her home, she spends 5 days a week, multiple hours a day hooked up to it and fighting for her life.
“This is where I’m at the majority of my day, is in this room,” King said.
But now, the access points on her body for the treatment are shutting down. So, she’s asking for your help.
“I really need to find a donor. I have been moved up on the emergency status for a donor to come forward, because it’s that very important. I need to get one,” King said.
Doctors say she has less than a one percent chance of finding a match— but, every time she looks at her children, she knows that she can’t stop believing for a donor.
“I do still have hope. I know there is someone out there who is going to help me, and I have my faith. That’s the only thing that’s keeping me going, is my faith and my kids,” King said.
Tasha King has been waiting for a life-saving kidney donation on numerous donor lists for more than a decade.
Hugging her youngest son and saying, ‘I love you,’ King is holding her children extra close these days & making the most of every moment with them.
