Officials are conducting an investigation into animal neglect after seizing 66 dogs from a residence off Saints Delight Church Road on Thursday.
The Craven County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Craven-Pamlico Animal Services and the Colonial Capital Humane Society in seizing 66 dogs from a residence off Saints Delight Church Road on Thursday.
The investigation into animal neglect is ongoing and charges are pending.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation stemmed from several complaints agencies received.
When deputies got to the scene, Sheriff Chip Hughes described the area as ‘very unsanitary’.
There were several breeds of dogs, one of which was pregnant.
He said the animals lacked rabies vaccinations and adequate water.
Unfortunately, this is not the first Craven County animal abuse case in 2019, and Hughes said it won’t be the last.
“We have quite a few more places like this, where maybe the owner’s intentions were not originally for it to get this big, but since we don’t have a spayed or neutered, they multiply and part of pet ownership is responsibility.”
Hughes said overall, the county puts down a lot of animals because it is hard to find that many good homes for them, and he said it is an on-going issue.
Right now, Craven County does not require people to spay and neuter their pets, but Hughes said it is something that needs to at least be considered.
