The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles says that 2,400 recently issued IDs have problems and that new licenses will be mailed to replace those with errors.
In a late Friday afternoon news release, DMV officials said that the licenses were “mailed with data flaws.”
Officials initially did not say what was wrong with the IDs — or how the public can possibly spot the problems. Later, DMV officials said that the flawed IDs have a “ghost image” in the bottom right-hand corner.
The DMV has told the vendor involved not to mail any new licenses until “it can be determined the vendor fixed the problem,” the news release said.
The DMV is currently creating a forensic IT team to investigate the problem.
Officials with the DMV also said they have notified Homeland Security “out of an abundance of caution,” the news release said.
Since 2015, all North Carolina licenses have been produced and mailed from IDEMIA, which is the vendor involved, officials said.
If your license has an error, officials said you should keep your temporary documents until a corrected license is mailed to you.
Officials said recipients will not have to pay for replacements, but should return the flawed ID to the DMV at an office or by mail.
The IDs with problems can be mailed to NCDMV Central Issuance Unit, 3176 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27697-3176.
Officials said the vendor would “cover these expenses.”
