200 million eggs from NC recalled after Salmonella illnesses reported

A recall of more than 200 million eggs is underway after 22 people have gotten sick, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Friday.

The eggs were distributed from the Rose Acre Farms in Hyde County and were sent to customers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, among other states.

Rose Acre Farms is voluntarily recalling 206,749,248 eggs from stores such as Walmart and Food Lion.

The eggs “have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” a news release from the FDA said.

In rare circumstances, infection from Salmonella Braenderup can result in the organism in the bloodstream producing severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis, the FDA said.

The eggs were also sent to Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

The brands of eggs include Great Value (sold at Walmart), Food Lion, Waffle House, Crystal Farms, Country Daybreak, Coburn Farms, Sunshine Farms and Nelms.

The Hyde County farm produces 2.3 million eggs a day and includes 3 million laying hens with a USDA inspector on-site daily, the FDA said.

The affected eggs are from plant number P-1065 with the Julian date range of 011 through date of 102 printed on either side of the carton.
