A middle school student was taken into custody Friday after a handgun was found in the student’s book bag, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office tells News13 that deputies with the department, as well as officers from the Maxton Police Department, responded to Townsend Middle School in Maxton Friday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. in reference to a weapon being on campus.

A 14-year-old student from Townsend Middle School was taken into custody for possessing a weapon on campus, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies say a .22 caliber handgun was found in the student’s book bag.

The student will be detained at a local juvenile detention center until a hearing is held, deputies tell News13.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office Juvenile Division.
