WALTERBORO, S.C. (WNCN) – A charter bus carrying a high school chorus group from Wilson, North Carolina crashed on Interstate 95 Sunday morning in South Carolina, officials said.
The students and chaperones were all from Beddingfield High School, according to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy.
The bus was traveling northbound around 1:10 a.m near mile marker 68 when it ran off the road and into the median.
The bus then went through a barrier and across the southbound lanes and then hit an embankment in the woods.
The bus sideswiped large trees during the wreck.
CBS affiliate WCSC reported 30 people were aboard the bus that was on the way back from Florida when it crashed.
Eleven people — five students and six adults — were transported to the Colleton Medical Center, Wilson County school officials said. The bus driver was among the adults taken to the hospital.
Some of the parents from Wilson drove to be with the students.
The bus company later brought a larger bus to pick up the group. After everyone was released from the hospital, the group boarded the other bus and was back in Wilson just after 4:30 p.m.
