LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – One person has died in the recent structure fire that critically injured an elderly couple.
Larry Lockler, 74, of Ira Road in Lumberton, died Friday morning from injures caused by a house fire on Wednesday. He was in critical care at Southeastern Medical Center.
Lockler and 75-year-old Nedra Cummings were both inside the home with the fire broke out about 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Cummings remains in critical condition as of Friday afternoon.
Deputies say the couple’s neighbor, Charles Jones, was a key factor during the fire rescue. The couple was removed from the home by neighbor Charles Jones as first responders arrived. Jones was treated for smoke inhalation at Southeastern Medical Center.
The fire appears to be accidental, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, although the department will continue to investigate.
