One person died and another was injured in a workplace accident at the Campbell Soup factory in Maxton on Sunday.
59-year-old Alex Radford, of Laurinburg, died after being pinned by a dumpster, according to a press release from Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey.
The release says the RCSO received a call around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday for a person trapped by a dumpster. Radford was attempting to dump a smaller dumpster into a larger dumpster at a loading dock. The smaller dumpster “jumped off track of the forklift” that Radford was using and when Radford attempted to correct the problem, the dumpster fell, pinning him. Another person went to help Radford, and “the dumpster shifted pinning both individuals.” Both individuals were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Radford later died. No information on the other victim’s condition is available.
According to the release, Radford’s death is accidental and an investigation is ongoing.
Dolores Quesenberry, Director of Communications with the NC Dept of Labor, says “I can confirm that the NCDOL, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Division was alerted of this incident and will conduct an investigation to determine exactly what happened. I have limited details at this time.”
An information sheet from the NCDOL say “an investigation can take anywhere from a few weeks to six months, depending on the complexity of the accident.”
