BRITTON’S NECK, SC (WBTW) – Members of the South Carolina State Guard offered a helping hand to hurricane victims in one of the hardest hit areas of the Pee Dee on Monday.

Marion County Emergency Management set up the Point of Distribution (POD) at the Saffold Center off of Highway 908. The State Guard handed out food and water to people in need from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Each family got three boxes of food and three cases of water, which is expected to last them for at least three days. The State Guard says their goal was to feed hundreds of people with the two truckloads of food and water that they had. When asked how many boxes of food they had, members of the State Guard said they didn’t have an exact number. According to the Chief Medical Officer Carl Kinard, half of the troops were from the medical unit and the others were from the Coastal Battalion.

“I’m impressed. We had 20 people on the list. Usually there are last minute problems so I figured we would deploy with 17. And we ended up with 21. Every single person who signed up showed up. Plus an extra. And they’re happy to be doing this. They want  to help,” said Kinard.

This was a joint effort among the State Guard, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross.
