For most high school students, summer break sounds nice right about now.
However, what’s a break when you dedicate your entire summer towards giving back.
“I mean, this is something that I could actually say that I was able to impact somebody’s life and they actually impacted my life as well,” mentioned South Florence High School senior, Chris Law.
We first met Law last summer and tagged along as his one man delivery service gave out fans to those in need.
“It never stops even now people are trying to donate me fans, but now is kind of like my busiest time,” law said as he shook his head.
“I couldn’t even give you a number to be honest. Every time I got one I just gave it somebody in need,” he added.
It led to his biggest inspiration for the project receiving a big surprise.
His great aunt, Etaphine Hyman, got a brand new air conditioning unit after nearly 50 years without one.
However recently, Law was in for a surprise of his own.
A couple of weeks back South Florence High held its academic award ceremony
“I went for one of my friends. I wasn’t expecting to get an award or nothing. I realized Ms. Hill said my name and my friend was like Chris she just said your names…go,” he said.
Law received a certificate and letter from none other than President Obama. He was honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award along with as a Prudential Spirit of Community Honoree.
“He wasn’t thinking about seeking recognition, but to simply help those that were in need,” mentioned Angel Page, Chris’ guidance counselor.
“Did I really get an award for this? I’m just speechless,” he said.
This is the first time a South Florence High student received this type of honor.
Chris will attend University of South Carolina Upstate in the fall.
He’s already hard at work preparing to help more people this summer. If you’d like to help his effort you can contact him at lawchris96@gmail.com.
