CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The son of a former Horry County Police Department chief has been arrested on gun and drug charges.
Cameron Alexander Rhodes, 20, of Conway, was booked around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, according to J. Reuben Long Detention Center booking records. He is charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol, sale or delivery of pistol to, and possession by, certain persons unlawful, possession with intent to distribute marijuana for a first offense, and possession of another controlled substance in schedule I to V for a first offense. Bail was set at $10,000 and he was released around 1:15 p.m. on Sunday.
According to an incident report from the Conway Police Department, Rhodes was arrested around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Units with the CPD were in the area of Smith Jones Park on February 23 in reference to complaints about possible drug activity, said the report. An officer conducted a traffic stop on a silver Nissan Altima. The vehicle reportedly turned onto Marion Street and came to a stop in a driveway. The officer contacted the driver and reportedly informed him that he was stopped for failure to use a turn signal.
The officer reportedly smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, the report also said. The driver and passengers were detained and removed from the car. Officers began a search of the car and the driver was reportedly asked if he had weapons in the car or on him.
The driver reportedly stated that there was a gun under the driver’s seat.
According to the report, Horry County dispatch confirmed the gun came back stolen out of Horry County. During a search of a backpack located in the passenger seat, officers found “a green leafy substance” believed to be marijuana, which reportedly weighed around 478 grams, and “a small baggy in the front pocket containing five total white bars imprinted ‘Xanax.’”
The driver allegedly stated he was selling the marijuana in his possession.
Public records confirm the link between Cameron and his mother, former HCPD Chief Saundra Rhodes.
Saundra served as police chief from 2012 until her resignation in 2016.
According to the public index records, Cameron Rhodes and Saundra Rhodes were listed under the same address.
