COLUMBIA, SC (WBTW) – A report shows much of the money intended to get South Carolina’s roads fixed more quickly hasn’t been spent.
Counties across South Carolina have made plans for less than half of the $216 million allocated by state lawmakers, according to The Greenville News, and only $4 million has been spent.
News13 requested data from SCDOT and found that Chesterfield and Darlington counties haven’t submitted plans for using their share of the money.
Other counties – Clarendon, Georgetown, Marion, and Williamsburg – have committed all of their funding.
The rest of the counties in our area have sent plans for some of the state funding.
- Dillon County – all funds committed except $472,000
- Florence County – committed $1.6 million of the allocated $6 million
- Horry County – committed $8.8 million of the allocated $10.5 million
- Marlboro County – committed $775,000 of the allocated $2.6 million
The newspaper reports lawmakers hoped projects would be finished faster by sending money straight to counties instead of state projects.
Legislation that would increase county road funding to $250 million is currently moving through the state legislature, The Greenville News says.
