CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – An inmate at J. Reuben Long Detention Center died after being taken to Conway Medical Center Wednesday.
According to Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler, inmate Jimmy Lee Calloway, 47, of Conway, died in the emergency room of Conway Medical Center at 11:46 a.m. Wednesday. The cause of death is pending, Fowler adds, but does appear to be from “medical causes.”
Horry County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Timothy Tyner says an officer found Calloway unresponsive in his cell around 10:45 a.m. The detention center officer alerted medical staff who initiated CPR and called EMS. EMS took the man to Conway Medical Center where he died a short time later.
An autopsy is expected Thursday afternoon at Grand Strand Medical Center.
SLED and the Horry County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident, Fowler confirms.
Calloway was booked in the detention center on June 26, 2017 after being arrested by Myrtle Beach police. According to the police report, Calloway was identified as having an active warrant out for his arrest and when officers searched him before putting him under arrest, police found a $1 bill in his pocket with a white substance on it that tested positive for cocaine. Reports state he had .67 grams of the drug.
Booking records from the detention center show Calloway was charged with possession of cocaine third offense, shoplifting under $2,000 and failure to appear after the arrest June 26.
