The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is continuing an investigation of an officer-involved shooting in Darlington County.
According to a press release from SLED, agents “continue work in their investigation of an incident Saturday when one woman was shot and killed in a confrontation with deputies of the Darlington County Sherif’s Office.”
SLED conducts law enforcement officer-involved shooting investigations at the request of the agency involved in the incident, the release says. “These independent investigations follow SLED’s guidance in conducting interviews along with the gathering and analysis of forensic evidence. Interviews are being conducted with the officers and others.”
The release also says the investigation is ongoing and no other information will be released by SLED at this tme.
“The incident in Darlington County was the 31st officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2018 and the first this year involving a deputy of the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office,” states the release. “In 2017, there were 49 officer involved shootings in South Carolina; one involved the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.”
Lt. Robert Kilgo, with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, says the incident happened around 8:45 a.m. on Saturday on Clyde School Road.
A woman was walking erratically in a yard when a person stopped to check on her, said Kilgo. She told that person that her father had been shot and the individual called 911 and deputies were dispatched.
Before deputies arrived, the woman pulled out a gun and pointed it at the person who had stopped and demanded him out of the car, according to Kilgo. When deputies arrived, the woman pointed her gun at them, and there was an exchange of gunfire. The woman was struck and deputies were able to get the gun away from her.
No deputies were injured in the exchange.
Upon investigation it was found that the woman’s father had not been shot and was not even home at the time.
The woman died, according to Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee. An autopsy will be performed on Tuesday.
