FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Earlier this year the nonprofit organization, Sisters for the Future was given a house to expand its office space and provide shelter for victims of domestic violence.
Angelica Reyes, the Board Director explains, “There is an increase in the homelessness here in Florence. Also, for women that have been battered and abused that have nowhere else to go.”
The new building will offer more services to women in need.
Reyes lists the new services the shelter will provide, “education, counseling, spiritual counseling, parenting classes.”
” Now we can offer the women more, say it’s an emergency. We get a call in the middle of the night we’re able to place them there. We will be able to settle them in… while we find resources to help them,” Reyes explains.
Each member on the organization board offers something to the shelter.
“I’m a stylist. I am with the organization because that is something that I can give back to these women. I give them their beauty back, I empower them to be successful,” Reyes said.
The women helping women, have one more obstacle to overcome before they can truly start the expansion proceed.
“We’ve raised three thousand dollars, we need three thousand more to move the home,” Reyes explains.
The home donation is along Pamplico Highway. With the highway under construction the home must be removed by the end of July. Six thousand dollars is needed to move the house to a corner lot near Downtown Florence.
“We’re in need of the community to come together, or home will be torn down. Then we will be back to our small office space,” said Reyes.
The organization is fundraising to pay for the move.
Reyes said, “We need a bigger building so we can make this happen!”
