MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The 43rd annual meeting of the South Atlantic Shrine Association (SASA) is this weekend in Myrtle Beach. Events began on Wednesday, September 14, and the Grand Shriners Parade was held on Saturday afternoon.
Thousands of people lined Ocean Boulevard to watch the parade. Shriners from eighteen clubs in seven states walked along the boulevard and many were dressed as hillbillies, clowns and even Egyptian kings. Others drove gokarts, a 13-man bicycle and mini-cars. One group from Florence, called the Omar Daredevils, features men who drive on a ramp over a car while the car is driving.
“It’s all for fun,” said Shriner, Eddie Wrenn. “To put a smile on your face.”
It’s also to promote and raise funds for the Shriner’s philanthropy, the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
“We do it for the kids,” added Wrenn.
The SASA event in Myrtle Beach also serves as a convention where official business is conducted.
