NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Dozens of people from local business and local high schools raced in shopping carts on Saturday afternoon in North Myrtle Beach.
The event, called “Pushing Past Youth Homelessness” was put on by the Sea Haven Transitional Living Program and aims to raise awareness and funds to fight youth homelessness in our area.
Teams dressed up and decorated the carts and raced them at Barefoot Landing. Awards were given for first, second and third place as well as for “epic fundraising” and “dead last cart.”
Program Manager, Andy Whipple, said there is a reason why the event centers around shopping carts.
“Typically, when people picture homeless people in their minds they picture that elderly person with a shopping cart. And we wanted to put a different spin on it. We help homeless youth 21 and under and we want to make sure those youth never grow up to be adults pushing a shopping cart,” said Whipple.
Funds raised from the event will allow the Sea Haven Transitional Living Program to help their kids find safe housing, search for jobs, learn life skills and continue their education.
The program’s next event will be the 3rd annual “Homeless Not Hopeless” charity walk in Murrells Inlet on October 29. For more on Sea Haven, click here.
