HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – The Horry County Sheriff’s Office says they have received several reports of a phone scam where a caller tells the person who answers that their child or grandchild is in jail on drug and weapon charges.

According to a post on the sheriff’s office Facebook page, the scammer claims an officer found cocaine and a firearm in the vehicle of the child or grandchild of the person on the other end of the phone, and they need to pay $3,000 for their loved one to be released from jail.

The sheriff’s office says this is a scam and no one receiving a call like this should give the con artist any information or money. If you are doubtful, deputies urge you to either contact a family member to verify that your grandchild is safe, or contact the sheriff’s office at 843-915-5450.
