FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Florence County officials announced Tuesday that the cause of death for the man found in a car close to the intersection of interstate 95 and SC 327 was ruled a suicide.
Sheriff Kenney Boone says the call came in around 2:30 p.m. about a shooting.
Officials say four men were in a pickup truck traveling from Florida to New York when the truck ran into a ditch.
Witnesses ran over to check on people inside the car and as they go closer, they watched three men run away from the pickup truck and found one man in the truck with a gunshot wound.
The Florence County Coroner’s office identified the deceased as Walter Allen Russ, age 34 of Avon Park, Florida.
All suspicious deaths are investigated as homicides until that cause can be ruled out, Major Michael Nunn of Florence County Sheriff’s Office said. While initially described yesterday as a homicide, further investigation into the death did not support that conclusion.
