Sewage spill closes section of North Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The City of North Myrtle Beach has closed a 500 foot wide section of beach to swimming at 6th Avenue South.

The closure was required after a sewer pipe break was discovered Monday morning.

Fortunately, the pipe is connected to a small pump station and the break only allowed between 300 and 400 gallons of sewage into the water before the break was discovered and fixed.

Coastal Carolina University is taking water samples in the affected area Monday and SC DHEC will take follow up samples Tuesday.

Based on those results, SC DHEC will determine if the beach can be re-opened.
