MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)-Millions of visitors come to Myrtle Beach every year and a lot of people visit and stay along Ocean Boulevard.
Many hotels in the area are eye sores and many of them have safety violations. City officials have handed out a number of code violations to multiple hotels in Myrtle Beach.
City spokesman Mark Kruea said the city has focused on code enforcement for more than fifteen years but this year they’re making a special effort to change the appearance of the entertainment district.
So far, hotels have been in violations for everything from hand rails, balconies, hanging lights, to unsafe roofs and rotting wood.
Kruea said city officials want the area to look better but ultimately they want people who stay on the property to be safe.
“Safety is the top priority but making that first impression is absolutely part of the picture with code enforcement, there are standards with property maintenance so that is what we’re enforcing at this point to make sure your building doesn’t detract from the area as a whole, that your building isn’t an eyesore. Those things are very much part of the picture.”
Hotels have thirty days to fix their properties.
None of the hotels in violation would talk to News13 but other business owners in the area told News13 they are happy to see some improvements as it could help their business if the area appeared nicer.
