SCRANTON, SC (WBTW) – Sen. Hugh Leatherman hosted another of his chicken bog dinners Wednesday evening. Wednesday’s event happened at the School House Barbecue Restaurant in Scranton.
The senator did his best to shake as many hands as he could, as time is running out before this coming Tuesday’s Republican Primary. Leatherman faces Richard Skipper in next week’s contest.
Sen. Leatherman says he hopes to remain in Columbia and continue to represent the people of Florence County.
One issue he plans to tackle involves helping Palmetto State farmers get back on their feet after last year’s floods — something he says he will do with or without the Governor’s help.
“You know the Governor vetoed that farm bill, I can’t believe she did that,” Sen. Leatherman said. “To me, that’s pretty heartless. But we overrode that veto and I’m glad the farmers know that. They are really appreciative to get the chance to get back on their feet.”
News 13 also asked Sen. Leatherman about the $4 billion roads plan signed by Governor Haley on Wednesday. Haley–not pleased with the plan–said in a letter to Leatherman that the bill is “…far less than what South Carolinians deserve or expect from us.”
The senator had a simple response to the Governor.
“I listened to the folks in my district,” Sen. Leatherman said with a smile. “They’re not too concerned with what Governor Haley says.”
Sen. Leatherman plans to host another event Thursday at the West Florence Fire Department. Scheduled guests include State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman and Speaker of the House Jay Lucas.
