DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) – Crews were out in the heat Friday afternoon repairing a second sinkhole at the entrance of Wells Street in Darlington County.
Roy Parnell with the South Carolina Department of Transportation tells News 13 after another sinkhole was reported, he didn’t realize that the road was in such bad condition.
He says the hole is man-made, caused by pipes laid years ago and heavier trucks that travel along Wells Street, which made it weaker.
Fire trucks sitting in the garage of the Darlington County Fire Department right at the corner of Wells Street weigh more than 45,000 pounds, and that does not include the pounds of water they carry, according to Darlington Fire Chief Pat Cavanaugh.
Cavanaugh says his concern is keeping firefighters safe.
The fire station sits next to the sinkhole being repaired and the sinkhole that was repaired just last week.
But will repairing these sinkholes keep others from forming.
Parnell says the Department of Transportation will get estimates for contractors to replace the entire road because the pipes are old and the road will eventually cave in again.
