SUMTER, SC (WBTW) – Investigators are still looking for a man accused of assaulting his girlfriend before firing shots at a home, leading officers on a high-speed chase and firing on the officers this weekend.
Ken Bell with Sumter County Sheriff’s Office says it happened early Sunday but they have not yet found Dontrell Montese Carter.
Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis says speeds in the chase exceeded 100 mph, and after the car crashed, the suspect exited the vehicle and fired at officers with an assault rifle.
No one was injured in the shooting incident.
“Had the city officer not waited for backup and attempted to stop this vehicle alone, there is a good chance Carter would have killed him,” the sheriff said.
Carter faces numerous charges including failure to stop for blue lights, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, several counts of attempted murder, driving under suspension and firing shots into a dwelling. More charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Officials say Carter has been convicted of other crimes in the past and is currently awaiting trial on several violent crimes.
He is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds. He is a medium-skinned black male with dreadlocks. Dennis warned that the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.
