CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW)- The South Carolina Highway Patrol and other agencies held a briefing Wednesday morning to discuss their plans ahead of any ordered evacuations for Hurricane Matthew.

Corporal Sonny Collins says they will have more troopers on hand to help with any evacuations and expected traffic congestion especially along Highway 501.

“We’ve already seen a lot of traffic leaving the beach on Highway 501. We started seeing the traffic pick up on Tuesday night. We’ve seen that continue on Wednesday morning. So, a lot of people headed those warnings to leave early, leave at your own pace. So, we’ve seen a lot of that happen which is good,” Collins said.

The Highway Patrol adds if you are told to evacuate and decide to stay it could be a delay in help getting to you if needed because law enforcement will have to deal with the storm conditions.
