CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – A school resource officer was hit in the head and hospitalized Friday afternoon during a fight at a Horry County school.
The incident report says it happened at 4:30 p.m. at 2694 Highway 905 in Conway.
Witnesses told police they saw a school resource officer breaking up a disturbance in the bus loading area. The incident report says the officer was holding a student by the wrist and it appeared that the officer had broken up an altercation and was preventing any further actions.
Officials say a large crowd of students had gathered and were yelling and cursing at the officer. The officer yelled for the students to get back, but the crowd continued to converge on him. The report says the victim was forced to use pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
A student jumped on the man’s back and repeatedly hit the victim in the back of his head and neck, police say.
Witnesses were able to grab the student and pull them to the ground where another officer was later able to handcuff the suspect.
Arrest warrants say a 17-year-old student was arrested for assault and battery second degree.
EMS and other units were called and the suspect was taken to J Reuben Long Detention Center after being treated on site by EMS.
The report says the officer was taken to Conway Hospital for treatment.
The case is still under investigation for other possible arrests.
