DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – Darlington Police say they are receiving calls regarding a new scam hitting residents in the city.

Chief Danny Watson says a new phone scam originating from 1-604-362-6460 is a person who claims to be a police officer from North Dakota. During the conversation he says that your loved one has been arrested and needs to get bail money to be released from jail.

“Police departments do not call you to send them bail money,” write Watson in the Facebook post.

Watson reminds anyone receiving calls claiming a friend or family member has been jailed to ask for specific information, double check the phone number and area code and never give your financial or personal information over the phone to these callers.

“When you get a random call asking for money, be suspicious. Be very suspicious. The internet is a powerful tool in the hands of scammers. They can and will know a lot of information about you. This may include family member names as well as a lot of other data,” warns Watson.
