Gaffney Police and Cherokee County Deputies chased a couple on a motorcycle Friday, which ended with the motorcycle passenger dead and the motorcycle driver in critical condition.

According to the Cherokee County Coroner’s report Lori Michelle Walker, 38 of Boiling Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene and Roger Allen Kirby, age 29 of Spartanburg was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional after the crash. Neither of the riders were wearing helmets.

Reports from both the Gaffney Police Department and the Coroner’s Office state that Kirby was identified by a 911 caller as a reckless driver, and he then took off from police on a motorcycle with a passenger when the officers attempted a traffic stop.

Eventually Kirby crashed going too fast around a curve on Old Georgia Highway, just before the Spartanburg County line around 6:40 p.m, authorities say.

Walker, who leaves behind a husband, was a native of Spartanburg and was a member of Cherokee Springs Baptist Church, a graduate of Boiling Springs High School and a graduate of Spartanburg Community College, her obituary said.

She worked in the past at BMW, Heaven Bound Supper Club and at the Cracker Barrel Store, the obituary said.

“She enjoyed singing, writing, drawing, animals, fishing and throwing football. Lori was never on time for any activity, but was always happy and there for her family and friends,” her obituary said.

“She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her,” according to her obituary.

Walker’s funeral will be held at 1 pm Tuesday, at Cherokee Springs Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Eggers Funeral Home of Boiling Springs is assisting the family.
