CHARLESTON, SC – A Charleston woman is waiting to hear back from the doctor if she is at risk for rabies after a bat scratched her at the library.
Charleston County Public Library employee Ashley Dowdy was setting up a room for a technology class Tuesday afternoon when a live bat struck her in the head. “It scratched me on the forehead and on the top of the head” said Dowdy, “he also relieved himself while he was there too.”
Dowdy is insistent that it was not a “bat attack” despite the blood shed. “It was a scared bat trying to run away,” said Dowdy, “it’s just scary and panicky thinking that somebody’s got you because who else could be in the room but a person not a critter.”
Animal control says the bat was euthanized and is being tested for rabies. Dowdy was given a vaccine immediately after the incident and keeps her mind off the pending results with levity. “I’ve had every possible joke cracked at me on Facebook and Twitter,” laughed Dowdy sporting a ‘support the rabid’ wristband, “no one’s put garlic on my desk yet.”
Dowdy says she will find out Thursday if the bat had rabies or not.
