The SC Department of Public Safety terminated a Highway Patrol Trooper after an investigation.
The investigation stems from a case involving Stephanie Callahan, a Loris woman who was found dead inside a “tree stand” after crashing her car over on February 19th just after midnight.
The investigation revealed L/Cpl. R.W. Batchelor did not properly follow protocol with regard to abandoned vehicles.
Batchelor was terminated on March 3, 2015
However, the effective date of his termination will reflect the date of his suspension, February 23, 2015.
He joined the Highway Patrol in 2006.
According to Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick, 24-year-old Stephanie Callahan crashed her vehicle off Morgan Road, just off SC 701.
Hendrick said Callahan then walked into nearby woods and climbed into a deer stand.
A search party consisting of family and friends found Callahan February 22.
Hendrick said it appears Callahan died from hypothermia.
