CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – A 16-year-old has been arrested after authorities say he shot and wounded an 8-year-old in Charleston.

Police tell The Post and Courier the shooting occurred early Sunday morning after two groups of people got into an argument.

Police spokesman Charles Francis says the 16-year-old allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired it, striking the 8-year-old in his left arm.

Francis says the child, who sustained a minor injury, was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.

Police say the teen, who was not identified because of his age, faces multiple charges, including assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

He was being held in the juvenile detention center. It is not clear if the teen has an attorney.
