South Carolina senators have approved a bill that would offer taxpayers three months to settle any overdue tax bills without fees, financial penalties or criminal investigation.
The Senate gave final approval Wednesday after a rare amendment was offered on third reading and failed. The amendment would have put all money raised during the amnesty toward state roads.
The bill would allow the Revenue Department to set the three-month tax amnesty period.
People already under investigation for tax problems could not get amnesty and tax bills must be paid in full or an installment payment set up before the three months ends.
The bill now moves on to the House.
